ZuriQ and Infineon join forces to advance ion-trap chip technology

In May 2025, ZuriQ and Infineon Technologies AG announced a partnership to develop novel trapped-ion chips for quantum computing. We could not be more thrilled about this and here we would like to tell you briefly why.

Firstly, a little bit about Infineon. Infineon is a leading global semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Germany. They specialize in power semiconductors, automotive electronics, and security technologies, providing innovative solutions that drive energy efficiency, mobility, and connectivity. However, what is less known is that Infineon has also been active in using their semiconductor fabrication prowess to make trapped ion chips for more than half a decade, initially supplying academic partners and more recently commercial quantum computing vendors.

Our founding team at ETH Zurich has already had fruitful collaborations with Infineon in the past, working on radio-frequency traps and more recently on chips that support our micro-Penning trap technology. Through these collaborations we have gained confidence that Infineon's rigorous, reproducible and reliable processes give us the best path to engineer traps of increasing complexity that is demanded by the ever growing need for greater qubit numbers. There are further synergies at play with our Penning technology - by removing the need for high voltage and high frequency electric signals that dissipate power into the substrate, we pave the way for straightforward integration into standardized industrial CMOS processes that use silicon as the chip carrier.

The first generation of our quantum computing systems will be powered by cutting-edge ion trap chips that will demonstrate 2-dimensional grids of ions with dynamic reconfigurability & low-noise performance. With these milestones in our sights, we're accelerating towards a quantum powered future!
